A spring holds a disc closed against system pressure. When pressure exceeds the set point, force wins over spring, the valve opens and vents flow until pressure falls back within limits — then reseats. Entirely mechanical, no power or signal required: that independence from every other system is precisely why codes trust it as the final safeguard.
Usage overlaps, but classically: relief valves open proportionally with pressure (liquid service), safety valves pop fully open (gas/steam, where fast venting matters), and safety-relief valves handle either. The distinction matters because the wrong action type in the wrong service under-protects or destabilizes the system. It's one of the first things the application datasheet resolves.
Set pressure is where the valve begins to open — chosen relative to the vessel's maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP). Blowdown is how far pressure must drop below set before the valve reseats. Together they define the valve's behavior in the real system: set too close to operating pressure invites leakage and chatter; wrong blowdown means cycling that hammers the valve.
An undersized valve can't vent flow fast enough during the worst credible event — pressure keeps rising with the valve wide open, which is exactly the disaster it exists to prevent. Oversizing causes destructive chatter (rapid open-close cycling) and premature failure. Rapid cycling where the valve opens, overshoots, slams shut, and repeats many times per second — usually from oversizing or excessive inlet pressure drop.
